Erlend Bertheussen has stepped into the role of project coordinator for the EU-funded STEESMAT project. With a PhD and extensive international experience in green fuels and energy systems, he now leads the effort to develop next-generation power solutions for large vessels.

Erlend took on the role in May after returning to Bergen from Denmark, where he worked in research and development related to green fuels and chemicals. With a PhD in electrochemical energy conversion and a decade of hands-on experience from international R&D environments, he now leads the coordination of STEESMAT — a Horizon Europe Innovation Action developing a new smart power architecture for large vessels.

“My main focus is ensuring smooth collaboration across the consortium and keeping the project on track towards its goals,” says Bertheussen. “It’s a privilege to work with such a skilled and diverse group of partners.”

Hosted by Maritime CleanTech, Erlend oversees the day-to-day coordination of activities across the 13 project partners, who are jointly developing and validating new DC-based electrical systems tailored for the future fleet.

“Erlend has already proven to be a valuable addition,” says Tore Boge, Head of EU Projects at Maritime CleanTech. “His technical insight and structured approach are helping ensure strong momentum in a highly complex and ambitious project.”

STEESMAT is currently in a key development phase, focusing on new system components, smart control algorithms, and integration strategies. Erlend emphasises the importance of regular dialogue and shared system understanding as critical success factors going forward.
